The Fens in a New Light

As the City of Boston continues to grow, there is a competing desire to support increased development and bolster high quality parks and open spaces for communities. The Boston Shadow Impacts Study aims to equip the City of Boston with the tools necessary to balance the continued health of parks and open spaces with ongoing new development that may cast a shadow over parkland.

With the completion of Phase One: Research & Analysis, Foundation, and Background in 2024, the work has officially entered Phase Two: Mapping & Modelling. This stage of the study features a shadow and thermal comfort analysis of two test scenarios in sites along the Back Bay Fens.

This amazing work wouldn’t be possible without our collaborators at Boston Parks and Recreation, City of Boston Planning, Reed Hilderbrand, Kim Chapman EcoLandscape, Buro Happold, and Neighbor Architects. Find updates and learn more about the study at the city’s website, here and at our project website, here.
