Agency is excited to continue collaborating with architects Marble Fairbanks for the Charlestown Navy Yard Gateway Center. Currently in the schematic design phase, the project imagines a welcoming and accessible landscape that brings visitors into and around a new building that will serve as the anchor to the Navy Yard. The new Gateway Center will house both the National Parks of Boston Orientation Center and the U.S.S. Constitution Museum and will securely lead guests to the U.S.S. Constitution.
The project presents the unique and exciting challenge of negotiating the needs and dreams of many varied users and stakeholders. Inspired by the juxtaposition of the rigid and awe-inspiring dry docks east of our site with the elegant curvatures of the ship’s knees, the design for the Gateway Center landscape transitions in form and texture in response to adjacent site conditions and uses: the active navy yard to the east, the public Harborwalk to the south and west, and the Freedom Trail to the north. Additionally, the new landscape and building work in tandem to adapt to future sea level rise projects for the project area. We look forward to seeing how the design develops!
