Located in the burgeoning South Waterfront neighborhood, Zidell Yards encompasses over thirty acres of formerly industrial waterfront that is undergoing transformation to become a vibrant, 21st century district. The Zidell Yards Master Plan describes a planning and design vision for a new neighborhood that values innovation, quality of life, development opportunities and public life amenities. The Zidell Yards site provides one the last public connections and largest redevelopment parcels along the Willamette River, linking a growing mixed use neighborhood and expanding medical university into Downtown Portland. Brie Hensold managed the plan while a principal at Sasaki.
The Zidell Yards master plan has five central goals: to create a new heart for Portland’s South Waterfront district, to honor the history and legacy of the Zidell community and land, to be a regional destination that offers unprecedented access and activation of the Willamette River’s edge, to focus on a high quality pedestrian realm, and to foster innovation and sustainability. To accomplish this, the plan envisions approximately five million square feet of mixed use retail, residential and office space in the coming years, bringing with it new jobs, residents, shoppers and tourists. New streets, bikes and a riverfront trails connect Zidell Yards into the South Waterfront, across to the residential neighborhoods of East Portland and into Downtown. Finally, Portland’s significant historic parks legacy and sustainability ethos are celebrated through a new sequence of parks and plazas that offer spaces for gathering and events, quiet and contemplation, and unique recreation amenities.
