The Cuyahoga Valley is the geographic center of the City of Cleveland, serving as a lifeblood for the city’s burgeoning industrial growth that made Ohio an innovator in manufacturing in the late 1800s to mid-1900s. Today, shifts in economic opportunity and changing perspectives of the river provide an opportunity to integrate the river’s industrial history with a future that centers recreation, housing, and transportation.
Agency worked with project lead OHM Advisors and the City of Cleveland Planning Commission, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, the Port of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks, Flats Forward and over 200 local stakeholders on a comprehensive, legacy vision for the Cuyahoga River Valley. The purpose of the project is to craft one river for all, create one vision for all parties to rally behind and through support and cooperation, build one Cleveland, with a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable future.
Through a broad and creative public engagement process, the highly collaborative public agency project team crafted a plan and set of recommendations to maximize the dynamics of and collaboration between industry, business, residential, recreational, entertainment, neighborhood, and transit users both on and off the water.
The river presents one of the biggest prospects in the city’s recent history to launch our region to a new economic level and become leaders in the way we integrate all the various interests and businesses within the river valley. Agency Landscape + Planning supported engagement and planning, and led the public space component on this transformative project.
