Agency led the first Comprehensive Plan for Medford, Massachusetts in over 30 years! The Comprehensive Plan is a thirty-year vision for the City that also guides policy and implementation over the next ten years. The Plan was approved in January 2023.
The Plan reflects Medford’s vision and values, celebrates the city’s uniqueness and many cultures, and identifies opportunities for growth and innovation. It targets seven areas of focus: land use; housing; economic development; history, arts, and cultures; open space and recreation; public services; and mobility, each of which have been studied in relation to the issues most important to the Medford community.
Medford residents, visitors, workers, and stakeholders shaped five overarching themes that organized the plan’s goals, objectives, and actions:
Agency led planning, design, and engagement for the Plan, working closely with Innes Associates for project management, land use planning, policy development, and zoning analysis; Karp Strategies for economic development and housing; ARUP for mobility; and LANDAU Design+Technology for visualization and engagement technology. Engagement included virtual public meetings, in person summer events, handouts and written feedback, an online map with over 1,300 comments and replies, informational animated videos, interviews and focus groups, and steering committee work sessions.
