Pawtucket Farm Wildlife Sanctuary is a 20-acre productive landscape in Lowell, Massachusetts, that has long provided Christmas trees and produce to the community. Agency has been leading a team in support of a partnership of Mass Audubon, Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust, and Mill City Grows since 2022 to design the site as the Pawtucket Farm Wildlife Sanctuary. The vision is to establish an urban wildlife sanctuary, farm, and education center for the community of Lowell. The Framework Plan articulated this vision with design and translated it into tangible actions.
Now, we are working with our partners at Hisel Flynn Architects and a broad team of experts to implement the vision. A major milestone for the project, the first segments of trail, known as phase one, were constructed by the Appalachian Mountain Club trails crew and opened to the public in the fall. Phase two of the site – more trails and an outdoor classroom – is moving into construction. Phase three is now in detailed design. We are finalizing the design of the farm landscape, education center, and farm support buildings for construction.
