Landscape Architecture Magazine highlights New York State Canals 2050!
“New Visions for the Erie Canal” features in the May edition of the American Society of Landscape Architects’s monthly magazine. With a focus on the sensitive history of the canals, LAM editor Timothy A. Schuler emphasizes the unequaled opportunities brought about by a project 338-miles long, through quotes from Agency’s Rhiannon Sinclair and Canal Corporation’s Justine Heilner.
“I think leadership saw [the new long-term plan] as a really important opportunity to reconnect with people and reset expectations about their relationship to the canals,” says Sinclair, referring to Agency’s year-long process to refresh the Canal Recreationway Plan. Built upon its predecessor, the new plan articulates a clear vision for the system as “a vibrant throughline of canals, parks, and trails for New York State”, supported by a set of guiding principles, strategies, and actions that lay out a path to achieving the goal.
“Many of the plan’s recommendations acknowledge the dual nature of the canal system’s scale,” writes Schuler, “It’s an enormous piece of infrastructure to maintain that also connects communities to nature and to one another, offering unequaled opportunities for recreational and cultural linkages”.
