Design Progress at Independence Square

After finalizing Design Development, we are excited to share progress at Independence Square (formerly known as Polk Park) in Charlotte, NC!

Central to this project is a historical fountain by Angela Danadjieva, which will be restored and re-imagined for 21st century use and engagement. Building off her original and masterful intent, the fountain will serve as an artistic backdrop to a flexible urban stage and an interactive water feature. The center of the square will include a flexible plaza for quiet activity, small scale events, mid-sized performances, and city-wide festivals. Additionally, flanked on either side of the fountain and reinforced by a sculptural and meandering seat wall are intimate shaded rooms for eating, reading, conversing, and viewing.

Independence Square is a partnership between the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Center City Partners, and Agency team which includes Kimley-Horn, Fluidity Design, Amplify, Michael Stiller Design, Zaragunda, the Cultural Landscape Foundation and RMF Engineering.

Stay tuned, as construction will begin in early 2022! To find out more information, visit the project page, here.
