Connecting Nature and Community in New Jersey

This past summer, we’ve been trailblazing with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to plan for the future Greenway trail! Formerly known as the Essex Hudson Greenway, the nine-mile rail property was acquired by NJDEP from Norfolk Southern Railway in 2022. The State plans to create a new linear state park that will connect Montclair to Jersey City.

Agency is working alongside NV5, Hive Public Space, Townsquare, Ummo, and Creative Urban Alchemy to plan the first phase of this incredible project. The future Greenway will provide new outdoor recreation opportunities and a fun new way to get around town. It will help reduce flooding, improve animal habitats, and serve as a catalyst for local economic development in the adjacent communities. It is also New Jersey’s first new state park since 2006!

We have been learning about community members’ visions for the Greenway at local events and at four community listening session workshops. We hope to see you at our next series of workshops, happening the first two weeks in October!
